![]() I kept the camera on the shark as it swam past us, giving us the side eye. The shark was enormous! I still remember what I said – “holy cow!” – but what I did amazes me. One instrument had a large radar reflector attached to it (so we could find it) and the reflector was about 1 meter across. We were diving at a methane seep in the Gulf of Mexico and were checking on some instruments we had deployed at the seabed. I saw this animal when I was doing my first dive in the sphere – as lead scientists on a dive – of the Johnson Sea Link submersible. One of the most remarkable animals I’ve ever seen from inside a sub was a 6-meters-plus sixgill shark ( Hexanchus griseus). I’ve had incredible ‘up-close-and-personal’ experiences with animals from inside a submersible and while scuba diving. Could you describe what’s that like? What was the most memorable encounter you had in the depths? You’ve been in submersibles and must have experienced amazing encounters with all sorts of fantastic and weird creatures. In the game, the player can dive and experience the ocean’s wildlife up close. I don’t look at the game as one part being more developed than another – I see this as a way to allow seamless downstream production. I love that science is central to the game! The gameplay and flow were developed strategically, and there are several jumping off points for development of future gaming scenarios. What do you think is the game’s greatest accomplishment in this regard? And what theme(s) do you think should have been explored further? We can see a good deal of science was weaved into Beyond Blue. Inside DeepRover during the BBC Blue Planet II filming expedition (at the brine pool). We also ideated technology that we felt was needed today – “in demand” – and that could be developed in the next 10–15 years. I helped ideate gameplay scenarios and assured that scenarios are based firmly in known science. My role involved sharing my knowledge of the ocean – particularly the deep ocean – with the E-line team. How did your experience in Marine Sciences was translated into Beyond Blue? What kind of advice were you giving? Overall, my work strives to understand how ocean ecosystems respond to perturbation through adaptation and resilience. I study the ocean “top to bottom” – I am fascinated by connectivity and complexity and a lot of our work assesses benthic-pelagic coupling and exchanges. I work a lot in deep sea extreme environments like hydrothermal vents and methane seeps, but we also work in the pelagic ocean. By training I am a microbiologist and a geochemist, so my work is interdisciplinary at its core. Serving as science advisor to the team was a rewarding and enriching experience.īefore we move on to talk more about your time with Beyond Blue, would you mind explaining a little bit of your research to our readers? ![]() When I met the members of the E-Line team and heard their vision for the game, I knew that I wanted to help in any way I could. I was connected to the E-Line team through my BP II contacts. ![]() I served as a science advisor to the BBC team during development and shooting of Blue Planet II. How exactly did that partnership came about? You were one of the experts who gave advice to the game designers of the recently released Beyond Blue. Samantha “Mandy” Joye from the University of Georgia (USA), to understand her role during game development and to get to know a little bit about the actual science that is backing Beyond Blue. We reached out to one of these scientists, Dr. And even better than that, they had the support of actual scientists to give them expert advice about everything that goes on in the sea. One of the most interesting things about Beyond Blue is that the team at E-Line partnered with BBC Studios and OceanX Media for creating the game. ![]() During your dives, you can see and interact with the marine fauna. The game is set in the near future, and you explore the ocean as part of a new research team. Beyond Blue is a new multiplatform indie game by E-Line Media. ![]()

![]() ![]() It clearly announces itself as Simple Math's "ambitious centerpiece" by going all in on the epic signifiers: daunting strings, a horn section at the bridge, massed vocals, and, of course, a kiddie choir to drive the hook home. Or you get something like "Pensacola", whose stein-swinging coda comes off like a fun idea they were dying to get in somewhere rather than an organic conclusion, to say nothing of its clear resemblance to a Modest Mouse song that happens to be called "Florida".Īnd then there's "Virgin". It's indicative of Simple Math's overcooking: Most of the time, the band can't find a moment of empty space it doesn't fill with that extra guitar overdub, more string cues, or another intimacy-sapping vocal harmony. While the burly guitars on "Mighty" and "Pale Black Eye" flex some swamp-rock muscle, as a full outfit, Manchester Orchestra simply plod instead of groove, bogged down by Simple Math's favorite artificial flavor, a charmlessly and coldly recorded string section. ![]() ![]() It's that ponderous alt-rock framework that makes Simple Math such a drag even as the lyrics and production feel like they're racing to out-sensationalize each other. The problem lies in where Hull ends and Manchester Orchestra begins, and it's a space populated by lesser sons of the south, post-grunge good ol' boys like 3 Doors Down and Collective Soul- tellingly, the most immediately hooky riffs of the lot ("April Fool") lay mere inches down the fretboard from those of "Shine", and "Leave It Alone" flirts too briefly with a raw tenderness before diving headfirst into the sugary dross of truck-selling power ballad "The World That I Know". It's hard to imagine something like the title track, which uses infidelity as a jumping-off point to question the entire basis of human existence, even standing a chance without it. His belief in his own profundity is kind of endearing as Manchester Orchestra's driving force. Hull's got a thing for drunken fuck-ups who own up to their failures, though he's far more interested in using it for autobiography rather than storytelling. As a frontman, he does his peers proud- while his astringent, high lonesome warble immediately recalls the Jim James/Ben Bridwell dialect, it's flexible enough to handle both rebel yells and vulnerable self-flagellation. But hell, if there's any Conor Oberst acolyte capable of making The Merrimack to Titus Andronicus' The Monitor, it's Hull. ![]() ![]() ![]() Using a linear reconstruction method such as the filtered back projection (FBP), which assumes that the object attenuates the X-ray linearly with the path length, results in cupping and streak artifacts which degrade the quality of the reconstructed image. This results in a non-linearity between the attenuation of the beam and the length of the propagation path. Since the attenuation value of the material is energy-dependent, it decreases as the beam is hardened. This shifts the mean of the spectrum to a higher value and results in the hardening of the beam. When photons of different energies penetrate through the object, low-energy photons are more easily absorbed than high-energy photons. One of the major artifacts that influence image quality is the BH artifact, which results from the polychromatic nature of the X-ray source. However, CT usually suffers from undesirable artifacts such as scattering, and beam hardening (BH) due to the physical nature of the X-rays. It is shown that the proposed method results in images with improved contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) in comparison to the images corrected from only the scatter artifacts and the BH-corrected images using the state-of-the-art empirical BH correction method.Ĭomputed tomography (CT) is an imaging technique that has been widely applied in medical and industrial applications such as for medical diagnosis and non-destructive testing. To evaluate the proposed BH correction method, we have conducted extensive experiments on real-world CT data. The simulated projections in this work are performed using a multi-GPU-accelerated forward projection model which ensures a fast BH correction in near real-time. As a result, an accurate non-linearity correction term is derived that leads to an accurate BH correction result. The estimated polychromatic projection is accurately derived using the least square estimation (LSE) method by minimizing the difference between the experimental projection and the linear combination of simulated polychromatic projections. Then, the non-linearity effect of the BH is corrected by adding the difference between the estimated monochromatic and the polychromatic simulated projections of the segmented image. This is achieved by performing a wide sweep of the material based on an experimentally measured look-up table to obtain the closest estimate of the material. This work aims to propose a fast and accurate BH correction method that requires no prior knowledge of the materials and corrects first and higher-order BH artifacts. This BH artifact arises due to the polychromatic nature of the X-ray source and causes cupping and streak artifacts. Beam hardening (BH) is one of the major artifacts that severely reduces the quality of computed tomography (CT) imaging. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not only does Apple disapprove of jailbreaking in principle, but most of the methods used by jailbreaking tools on modern iPhone devices are actually exploiting security vulnerabilities in iOS or the underlying hardware to get into your device in the first place. Jailbreaking an iOS device also voids your warranty, so if something goes wrong, you’re on your own. It’s also worth noting that Apple strongly warns against jailbreaking, stating it can introduce security vulnerabilities, disrupt ongoing services, and shorten your battery life. Although it's perfectly legal to jailbreak your iPhone and other iOS devices in the United States, this may not be the case in other jurisdictions. There's also the question of legal issues and warranty support. In extreme cases, an update could even "brick" your iPhone, rendering it incapable of starting up at all. The worst-case scenario is that an iOS update could conflict with the steps you've taken to jailbreak your device, requiring you to restore your device to factory settings and start over completely - without any of your data. This also assumes that a jailbreak is available for the newer iOS version, which it often won't be, as it takes a while for the jailbreaking community to catch up when Apple releases a new iOS update. This means you can't get new features or important security updates - at least not right away.Īt best, updating iOS will undo your jailbreak and you'll have to go through the whole process again. The bottom line is that you're doing this at your own risk.Īlso remember that once you've jailbroken the phone, you won't be able to update to a new version of iOS using Apple's built-in software update tools. This guide also doesn't guarantee that you'll even be able to successfully jailbreak your iPhone or iPod - with all of the different tools and iOS versions out there, the whole process is still more art than science. ![]() Apple likely won't help you out in this case, and we can't be held responsible for this either. You're doing something with your iPhone that Apple never intended for you to do, so there is definitely a chance something could go wrong during the process and you may end up with a non-working iPhone. Still, jailbreaking can be useful to install and run apps that can't be found on the App Store, or even just as a step toward unlocking your iPhone so you can use it on another carrier.īefore we get started, it's important to note that jailbreaking is not without its risks. However, jailbreaking has become less popular as iOS has evolved and Apple has added many of the features that were previously only available to the jailbreaking community. There was a time when jailbreaking was almost essential to do any customization of your iPhone, or even to run apps in the background. Although you can continue using the App Store, you can also install other apps from other stores, change the look of the operating system, and plenty more. Jailbreaking your iPhone means freeing it from the limitations imposed by Apple. If you have an older iPad, though, then you’ll still be able to jailbreak older versions of iOS on the iPad - just not any iPad running iPadOS. Please note: As the iPad has moved away from iOS with iPadOS, the following techniques for iOS 14 are unlikely to work on an iPad running iPadOS. However, jailbreaking a device is a complex process, but for the dedicated, it can mean they get more out of their iPhone or iPad Touch. This includes installing third-party apps, customizing the look of the phone's software, or even installing a whole new operating system entirely. As a result, it opens up your device to a number of possibilities beyond what Apple normally permits. Jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch basically involves replacing or modifying key components of Apple's iOS operating system with custom applications. ![]() ![]() Object of the Game: To be the first player to score 500 points. Let us know about the Vietnamese series of your childhood that should be available for everyone to see. The list is mostly based in southern Vietnam, as I am most familiar with shows from this region moreover, it's by no means exhaustive. The series span from 1997 to 2008, so there are technical limitations to their viewing format, but they all share shining qualities like compelling scripts, distinctly Vietnam settings and memorable writing that has resulted in some iconic lines and moments. A decade later, what was once hip has turned vintage cringe-worthy, dorky moments have become endearing and Top 40 soundtracks are now nostalgia fodder. Which brings us to the following list of series that shaped the local pop culture landscape of 2000s Vietnam. But, for the first-ever Vietnamese representative, in my opinion we could do much better than Hau Due Mat Troi, especially when local show producers are fully capable of creating original stories that are rooted in Vietnamese culture. I am aware that Netflix is not a bastion of cinematic excellence in fact, as the service diversifies, it has churned out some truly horrendous train wrecks. If the original went on to be a regional phenomenon whose rights were bought by 32 countries, the Vietnamese remake is at best an exercise in good-looking mediocrity, and at worst a gross disservice to local television shows. It dabbled in some luscious Saigon food porn in an episode of the documentary Street Food, but to date, the only Vietnamese-produced show available is Hau Due Mat Troi, a remake of the South Korean drama Descendants of the Sun. Still, when it comes to series, Netflix’s library is woefully lacking. Just last month, Netflix quietly launched a Vietnamese-language interface with more locally produced movies popping up over time, such as the action smash hit Hai Phuong and LGBT flick Yeu. Even now, Netflix is still largely unknown among the local population, who are content with the hours of entertainment they can extract from Facebook and YouTube. ![]() ![]() The arrival of Netflix in Vietnam wasn’t accompanied by much fanfare: three years ago, the streaming giant announced a worldwide expansion to 130 countries, including Vietnam, bringing its reach to 190 nations. ![]() Gone were the days of timing one’s bathroom dash exactly during commercial breaks and gathering around a neighbor’s old television set, the only one in the entire alley, to relish every minute of a hot soap opera.
